Today it happened again… Driving around in the car and suddenly there is a beautiful song on the radio that you have never heard before. You really like to know the artists name but at those moments the DJ keeps quiet ! Quickly wrote down snippets of lyrics and hope that google will come up with the right song. In this case all hits lead to Paolo Nutini, an italian with a scottish accent who mix up old and new styles and makes it his own. Turn up the volume !

Kintsukuroi – a dance opera
Music Posted on 18 October 2014 13:37Kintsukuroi (金繕い?)(Japanese: golden repair) is the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with lacquer resin dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum a method similar to the maki-etechnique. As a philosophy it speaks to breakage and repair becoming part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.
The premiere of this ‘Dance opera’ was at the Oerol Festival 2014, in june, on the island Terschelling. We saw the performance at the music theatre in Enschede, oct. 15. A beautiful production where dance, music, poetry and theatre melt together.

Shawn James & Shapeshifters in Europe
Music Posted on 5 October 2014 17:16A long time ago the great american band Grateful Dead came to Europe and I decided to follow the group throughout Germany and England. This year I got the same kind of feeling when Shawn James and the Shapeshifters decided to come over and do a european tour. Ok, this time i only had a chance to see two gigs, but the feeling was somehow similar.
This band plays some freakin’ good music. It’s hard to describe this kind of music. Have you ever heard a violin player do a cover of Iron’s Maiden “Number of the Beast”, have you ever seen a guy playing a mandolin and drinking beer at the same time, and have you ever heard a voice before, that’s a mixture of Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Edgar Broughton…
We will not forget these two concerts very soon. The music has a beautiful mix between the heavy songs and ballads, the lyrics are at times very personal and there’s such a strong power in both voice and music. And the extra dimension comes from the frontman’s bond with nature. It’s coming back in the music, the lyrics, the covers, and in the YouTube video’s.
Watch Shawn James and the Shapeshifters on their first european concert in the “Atak” club, Enschede, Netherlands. The sound was recorded with a Zoom Q2 recorder and the video was recorded with a Koday HD Playsport. With this kind of music it’s hard to stand still, so excuses for the shaky images. Click the image below for the video (90 min.) >>>
Truely recommended!
Update 8/10/2014 The band did an acoustic show for Friesland radio >>>

Change of season (II)
Music Posted on 23 September 2014 23:49It’s autumn again, my favorite season; strong winds, rain showers, falling leaves and colors that play. And longer nights to listen to good music. Like this song of Fink: Looking too closely. The song has got nothing to do with autumn but it gives me a real autumn feeling…

Records for sale !
Music Posted on 24 August 2014 10:45Never thought the day would come but’s now it’s happening. Apart from the Grateful Dead, Robert Wyatt and John Martyn collection the records are for sale. More than the digitally re-mastered CD, and much more than the compressed audio file downloaded onto your portable media player, the vinyl record is a physical archive of a particular moment in time. I’ve collected LongPlay albums, Compact Discs, 7 and 12″ singles and books for a long period and was planning to categorise and label the records at the time I would get my pension and would have more spare time. But that’s just too long away and i’ve decided to start the sale now. This means the database isn’t up-to-date and it will take a little time to find and label the item you want… But, hey, you can allways give it a try and mail me if you want an item from the lists below.
Long Play albums (LP’s)
Compact Discs (CD’s)
7″ singles
12″ singles

Album of the Year (1)
Music Posted on 26 May 2014 23:37 Yes, it’s a little bit early, not even half the year has passed. But the new album of Ben Watt could very well become the ‘Album of the year 2014’ I love the music of Ben Watt ever since he had teamed up with Tracey Thorn as Everything but the girl.
After that Ben Watt released a fine solo album with guest Robert Wyatt, and later he concentrated on his DJ-work. But now he’s back with a great solo album. The three songs below are from the BBC 2 Bob Harris radio program ‘In Session’.

Lost in thought and lost in time
Music Posted on 17 April 2014 22:11Now that we have redecorated our living room it was time to get rid of the Ikea rose and ask a good friend of ours if he would make a painting inspired by the song “Coming back to life” of Pink Floyd (David Gilmour) or by “Dark Star” of the Grateful Dead. (click the painting for the music mix).
We are thrilled by the result. I think the colors and the theme of the painting represent most the song of Pink Floyd: dark, moody and mysterious but with a very present positive force which lead to new chances. Coming back to life. A new life.
It could be that the lyrics are written from a point of view of Syd Barret’s, but that’s just a guess. It’s a song about betrayal, but even more about second chances, new opportunities. The music is very uplifting and the guitarsolo’s are just incredible.
The combination of colors do reflect the mood of the psychedelic Dark Star, a 30 minute long improvisation by legendary american hippie band The Grateful Dead. The music of Dark Star is an exploration into deep space and a prime example of musicians jamming and improvising together and creating mind-expanding art…
about the painter Willem Grift

Let’s get a little lost
Music Posted on 6 April 2014 19:18Long time go we went to Hedon, a youth society club in Zwolle, to see bands like Herman Brood, Vitesse, Gruppo Sportivo… Now we come to the new Hedon for the bands of today, featured during the “Let’s get a little lost” festival.
Ásgeir live in Hedon (Zwolle, 5/4/2014)
Dýrð í dauðaþögn is the debut album by the Icelandic singer-songwriter Ásgeir Trausti. The album was recorded in three or four months in the summer of 2012. Most of the original Icelandic lyrics were written by Ásgeir’s father. The album became the best selling debut album ever in Iceland. In the Silence, an English language version of the album, is translated by the American musician John Grant. Only the vocal part is different from Dýrð í dauðaþögn.

I Am Oak – On Trees And Birds And Fire (Hedon, 5/4/2014)
In 2011, I Am Oak won the Dutch based 3VOOR12 Award for best album for their 2011 release, Oasem. In 2012, the band showcased at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas and performed three shows at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. 2012 also saw the release of the band’s third full-length album entitled “Nowhere Or Tammensaari” on Snowstar Records The album was recorded in a house in a small town in Finland, the name of which translates to “oak island.”

Ribs&Blues 2014
Music Posted on 30 March 2014 22:37This weekend the line-up for the annual Ribs&Blues festival in Raalte (NL) was announced. I proposed to invite Shawn James and his band to the festival but didn’t get any reply. But there are plenty of other interesting bands. Two of them I definitely will watch are:
The Delta Saints
Of zoals het Franse muziekvakblad Les Inrockuptibles omschrijft: ‘The singer and guitarist Bombino emerges from the dunes of the Sahara with his desert folk dancing in the flames. Absolutely magical.’

Spotlight on the backing vocals
Music Posted on 30 March 2014 00:06Spotlight on the backing singers
Three videoclips where the backing singers play a major role. First place is for Elvis Presley who is surprised to hear the backing singers take over his song…

Second is brasilian singer Gabriel o Pensador. As soon as he steps back the background singers take charge. And wow, what a voice !
//www.youtube.com/embed/AoPqbgtLX5g?list=FLsHGkc-LPk4KUEe5oawVtSg
Third clip is from my favorite KrautRock band Ashra Tempel. The vocals of Rosi reminds me of Nico, but it’s the backing vocal (and guitar) of Manuel Gotsching that’s giving the song an extra dimension.

Original African Man
Music Posted on 2 January 2014 00:40It was in Bretagne, France, when I first heard of the music of Fela Ransome Kuti. I bought the album Zombie, pure for the nice cover and the cheap price. Never heard of the man before and can’ t remember where we bought the albums, i believe it was at a store or market in Concarneau.
The chef of the cafe/bar at Foret Fouesnant was kind enough to play our records in the bar. This record, along with Roy Buchanon’s You’re not alone and Harmonum’s Cinq Saisons left an unforgettable impression since then…
But remember, these were vinyl albums. There were no cell-phones, internet or any other social media. Just the music and the record cover.
Then, by coincidence, i saw in the tv magazine that there was a german NDR broadcast with Fela Anikulapo Kuti and his band. After a first mind blowing musical experience in a bar in Bretagne, this was a great follow up. It was 1978 and for the first time i saw Fela live in action and i was blown away with his music, his performance, his big band, and the lady dancers!
In hindsight, i think the germans did a great job of bringing such a big band to Berlin and broadcasting the concert live to Germany, Nigeria, and Holland. Sound quality and video recording are perfect, and that in the year of 1978 !

What are their names ?
Music Posted on 28 December 2013 01:51I still remember when I bought David Crosby’s first solo album “If I only could remember my name” in the early seventies. I was flabbergasted with the music and the words, what a great album! How surprising when I read the reviews of the album in my muziekkrant OOR, in Rolling Stone and other magazines: the album was butchered by the critics and I just couldn’t understand why…
//www.youtube.com/embed/lOs6G34AOBY
Now so much years later… they’ re old men now but just as strong as ever. And the music still is as powerfull as in the early days. And I’m so glad I didn’t care about the reviews in the press and followed my own path… Guinnevere forever !!!

Tom Odell Live 2013
Music Posted on 5 December 2013 13:30Tom Odell’s big breakthrough in the Netherlands was the success of the hit “Another Love”. He played at the big open air festival Pinkpop but the only clubconcert this year was in De Oosterpoort, Groningen. The Chichester-born, British singer/songwriter performed well with a nice mix of passion-songs. For live footage of the concert, low-fi shot by Janneke (iPhone) and myself (Zoom Q2), click on the photo below…

Sarasani
Music Posted on 14 November 2013 20:48In the early seventies there were two places where my friends and I could score some pot. In Arnhem we went to te Noppensteeg and in Utrecht, aan de Oudegracht met Geertebrug, we visited the Sarasani cellar. It was in the days before coffeshops even existed. Especially the ‘werfkelder’ in Utrecht was a favorite of us. The cellar used to be a storage cellar for the Sarasani Circus but the place was sold to Holly Hasenbos in 1968.
The place was magic. Bert and I would walk along the Oude Gracht and at some point took the stairs down to the channel. When we entered the cellar we pass along some live snakes, the lights changed into blue light, there was always good music and a very relaxed atmosphere. Plenty of different choices and a friendly owner who helped us choose the best shit of that day. I remember he had very strong arms, just as thick as the mighty pythons at the entrance. After the buy we sat down on the couch back in the cellar, took our chilms and enjoyed the chitral, khandar, zero zero, red Lebanon, maroc or wiet, enjoying the music and good apmosphere. Really mind-expanding times. Remember; these were the days where Koos Zwart did his weekly price update of stuff every Saturday on national VARA radio!
Unfortunately the story has a sad ending. The owner, Holly Hasenbos, was at least ten times arrested by the police and every time he managed to come back and open the beatclub again. At the time I had no idea but the terrarium with snakes was used as a storage place for his stuff. Without knowing it Holly was a forerunner of the modern coffeshop-rules that are present today. But the constant runs on his club changed him from a very relaxed person to a man living under constant pressure. In 1984 he was driving in his red MG through the city of Utrecht and was halted by the police for a defect backlight. It isn’t exactly clear what happened then. Apparently a stressed and paranoid Hasenbos draw a gun and police shot him dead on the spot…

It wasn’t the end of the Sarasani club yet. A familymember took over and ran the club until 2007. That year the mayor closed the club becaused they had selled a ten kilo deal to a german customer. That marked the end of a special place, Holland’s first beatcellar where bands like Q65, Golden Earring and Cuby & Blizzards have played. As a coffeeshop it was well known, not only by the dutch but also by Italians, Germans, French, English and Americans. The end of a monument.

The lost and found series (6)
Music Posted on 8 November 2013 23:46Deep Funk
it was in the late seventies/early eighties when I used my cassete-tapedeck and lp’s and 12″ to make mixes for listening pleasure during cartrips. Most of them got lost but I’ve found this funky mix, 25 minutes of deep funk, back on an old hard disk. Unfortunately no playlist but among others some music of Parliament, James Brown, James Blood Ulmer, Ronald Reagan and others… Hit Me ! (click on the picture to start the music)

vof De Kunst
Music Posted on 8 November 2013 22:50 Each and every friday afternoon I listen to the AVRO live radiobroadcast of “Vrijdagmiddag Live”. They’ve got good live music and satire… This day (8/11/2013) the musical guest were the VOF De Kunst band from Tilburg. The last years they performed with success songs for children (and their parents) and before that they had a smash hit with “Kopje koffie” but now they have released a new album and i’ve chosen two songs I really like: “Hoop” and “Lievevrouwenplein”

The lost and found series (5)
Music Posted on 1 November 2013 23:19Fifteen minutes of fame …
More than 30 years ago there was a very popular VARA dutch radio show called “2 meter de lucht in”, hosted by Jan Douwe Kroeske. Listeners could send in their favorite four songs and a description why they liked those songs so much and if you were lucky your list was picked as mini-LP of the week. So I spend a good time behind the typewriter and send in a letter with a list of songs and why I liked these songs so much. The songs were broadcast on radio and I received a “LP-bon” for the worth of 25 guilders… good old times ! If you want to listen to the broadcast, just click on the picture below. warning: the audio glitches only appear on the spoken text inbetween the songs.
tracks:
Fleetwood Mac – Black Magic Woman
spoken text
Waterboys – A girl called Johnny

Eurythmics – Never gonna cry again

Gil Scott Heron – Angel Dust

Change of season
Music Posted on 19 October 2013 22:29 It’s autumn again, my favorite season; strong winds, rain showers, falling leaves and colors that play. And longer nights to listen to good music. Like this song of Milo Greene: Autumn Tree. Recorded live at the guitar centre (2013).

Daniel Norgren – Live in Lund
Music Posted on 6 October 2013 20:51 It was only a small detour during this year’s Scandinavian trip… Lund, Sweden. So we couldn’t pass this concert of the big swedish bluesman Daniel Norgren. The concert was at the Mejeriet club, a small concert venue in a beautiful park. This is our fourth Norgren concert but the first where he performed with two other players during the whole concert. Anders Grahn on upright bass and Andreas Filipsson on organ and guitar. Compliments for the band but also for the public. They were very quiet during the music and went crazy inbetween the songs !
The playlist below has a collection of seven song plus some photo’s of the record-signing session right after the concert. The footage was recorded with a Kodak Playsport (video) and a Zoom Audio Recorder (audio).

A living part of jazz history
Music Posted on 19 August 2013 19:12 Drummer Jimmy Wormworth, who has played with Art Farmer, Kenny Dorham, John Coltrane, Booker Little, Pepper Adams and Bobby Jaspar, joins double bass player Putter Smith from the same generation, Charles Davis on saxophone and Michael Kanan on piano, with Jorge Rossy as master of ceremonies. They play music that is part of the living history of jazz – a unique concert at the Plaça Llevantina, L’Estartit.

For Deadheads only
Music Posted on 21 July 2013 23:10This song review is an excerpt from Mikes Grateful Dead Blog
China Doll is a moody ballad with one of the most beautiful transitions from minor to major in rock music that I’ve ever heard. This song was originally released on the From the Mars Hotelalbum in 1974 and featured harpsichord.
China Doll is very much revered but is still underrated. China Doll should be an even more high profile Grateful Dead classic than it currently is. I am sure the song is virtually unknown outside of Deadheads so it earns the distinction of being For Deadheads Only.
This song is so deep, eerie, and mysterious it disappoints me that more people aren’t exposed to it. It is a very slow melancholy dirge and another thing that might detract from it’s popularity amongst Deadheads and the public at large is that the lyrics are very vague. I am not even sure what the plot of the song is or if the dialogue is a one person monologue or between two people, etc. The opening lines are vague:
A pistol shot at 5 o’clock
The bells of heaven ring
“Tell me what you done it for”
“No I won’t tell you a thing”
It has been written in the books that (per Robert Hunter) the opening shot refers to a suicide but without that 3rd party information I wouldn’t have known that. This fact of the vague lyrics does not bother me at all because I love China Doll so much but I am just conjecturing that the unclear storyline and lack of identifiable characters (ie no “Black Peter” in this one) might have caused the song not to receive the fanfare I think it deserves.
The song goes on with cryptic lyrics until the unbelievable tension release before the final lines:
Take up your china doll
it’s only fractured
just a little nervous from the fall
This transition from minor to major is chillingly effective and really a compositional triumph on Jerry’s part. This part gives me goosebumps pretty much every time I hear it. Also I must mention that Jerry always played an anguished, minimal, and soulful solo on China Doll in a “slowhand” style with lots of bent notes that was not his typical style.

Ribs ‘n Blues 2013
Music Posted on 9 May 2013 12:15Schotjes timetable for this year’s RnB Festival, Raalte, NL.
————————————————————————————————
Atri N’ Assouf (zondag 19/5, open air stage, 17.15 uur)

Barrelhouse (zondag 19/5, main stage, 16.30 uur)
Bestaat volgend jaar 40 jaar! Verdere uitleg overbodig, gewoon meemaken.

Matt Schofield trio (zondag 19/5, main stage, 21.30 uur)
The Man from Manchester viert Pinksteren in Raalte.

You can watch the seperate clips in High Definition on You Tube or the whole concert in Low Definition by clicking on the picture…
